How Do I Want to be Remembered?

It can be grim to think about what’ll happen after you pass away – but it doesn’t have to be.
How Do I Want to be Remembered?

Thinking about our own death and mortality is normal. It would actually be pretty weird to go through life and not think about it at all. I mean, haven’t we all asked one of life’s biggest unanswered questions at some point – What happens when we die?

While we might not have the answer to that question (sorry to disappoint), we can help you think about the way you’ll be remembered after you die.

At the end of the day, the way we’re remembered will likely come down to the way we lived, the people we touched and the stories we left behind. So, if you’re trying to brainstorm ways to be remembered – we’ve got you. Read on to hear our top tips.

Write it down

You probably already know how you want people to remember you, but it can be hard to convert those thoughts from your brain into action.

Writing down everything you want your loved ones to remember you for can be a good way to frame your actions in everyday life. Perhaps you want people to remember you as being kind. Maybe you have certain goals you want to achieve in your lifetime.

You don’t have to go too deep, though – you can just jot down some notes in a journal, or even on the Notes app on your phone – as a way to stay accountable in your day-to-day.

Look to those around you

Everyone has different people they look to as role models or for inspiration. Ask yourself these two questions:

  • How do those people act?
  • What have they achieved?

If you’re impressed by the way someone is living their life, it probably means the legacy they’ll leave behind will be strong, too.

Take note of what you notice, and find ways of implementing similar actions (but in a way that feels authentic and natural to you. Nobody likes a copycat).

Leave a charitable gift in your Will

One thing you can definitely plan for before you die is leaving a bequest in your Will. This means a certain amount of money will be donated to a charity of your choice after your passing. It’s a great way to make an impact after you die and a powerful way to ensure you’re remembered long after you’ve passed.

You can leave a bequest when you write your Will with Willed. Learn more here.

Create your own legacy project

Another great way to have an impact on the way you’re remembered is to create a legacy project. This can take any form you’d like, whether it’s a photo album, piece of writing, or artwork (to name a few – but feel free to get creative!). These projects are a beautiful way to tell the story of your life, dreams, goals and accomplishments. You can even sneak in a funny story or two that your loved ones might not know about you.

Be authentic

At the end of the day, the best way to live your life is – *drumroll please* – authentically. When you live a life that feels true to you, you’re ensuring that your friends and family will remember you for who you really were.
