What happens if a family cannot afford a funeral in Australia?
Answered byJames DanielsFuneral ArrangerWatch · 1:15Ask the funeral director about assistance that may apply to your family’s circumstances. Depending on eligibility, support may come from Centrelink bereavement assistance, veterans’ benefits, workplace compensation or a victims of crime scheme. These programs have different rules and do not guarantee that every funeral expense will be covered. Check with the relevant agency and discuss an affordable arrangement before committing to costs.

So generally, if a family can't afford a funeral, it's best to check what entitlements you have available to you. Oftentimes, in some cases, there is a surviving spouse of a loved one that receives a pension. So sometimes Centrelink will process a bereavement payment and that will help with funeral related expenses. Oftentimes, if death occurs at work or because of a work related issue, there is workplace that you can go through and ascertain any entitlements there. Also, if death occurred due to some sort of crime, that is victims of crime, where you would make an application through them and they would pay for funeral arrangements. Also veteran affairs. If the loved one was a veteran or their spouse was a widow of a veteran, there is payments available to help with funeral arrangements. So I would suggest just checking what entitlements are available with your funeral director, and they can best assist you with that.
