Is it legal to arrange a funeral yourself without a funeral director in Australia?
Answered byJames DanielsFuneral ArrangerWatch · 1:23In many circumstances, families can arrange a funeral themselves, but the legal requirements differ between states and territories. You would need to organise transport, appropriate care and storage of the body, cemetery or crematorium bookings and the required paperwork. Coronial cases can involve additional requirements, so confirm these with the relevant authority. A funeral director can handle this coordination and explain which parts the family can organise.

You can absolutely arrange a funeral yourself without a funeral director. It is quite hard, especially in today's times, to do so. For instance, you have to make all of the bookings yourself. So with the cemetery or the crematorium, you'll have to make the booking and you'll have to organise the transport of your loved one. And obviously not many people have a mortuary on hand. So, you know, you have to be wary of the fact that you've got to organise that with an independent mortuary. While you're doing that, you've then also got to organise the paperwork. So there's certain legal documents that we need when we're organising a cremation. And that is sometimes or oftentimes very difficult for families to navigate without the expertise of a funeral director kind of to help you in that process. So basically, I would recommend using a funeral director because, you know, you have their expertise at your disposal and they'll be able to guide you through the process more smoothly. There are some cases where you can't organise a funeral yourself, that's generally when the coroners are involved, because there's certain paperwork that needs to be filled out and submitted by your funeral director to the coroners and it's a little bit more involved.
