What is a funeral celebrant in Australia, and how are they different from a funeral director?
A funeral director manages the practical arrangements behind the service, including transfers, paperwork, bookings and the cremation or burial. A funeral celebrant focuses on the ceremony: they meet with the family, learn the person’s story, help organise eulogies, readings, music and speakers, and lead the service. A minister may fill this role for a religious funeral.

So this is a common misconception that a funeral director does the whole thing for you. We definitely meet with you when we plan the service with you, but we usually refer you to either a civil celebrant or a minister depending on the type of service. So if you're wanting a non-religious service, I would recommend a civil celebrant. They will meet with you independently of us and go through everything pertaining to the service. They'll go through eulogies, speakers, anything special you might like to do for the service and so on. They'll really help piece together the service, learn a little bit more about your loved one's life and delve a little bit deeper than us funeral directors can in the space that we have. Think of your funeral director as the one organising everything behind the scenes and booking everything. Think of your civil celebrant as the one conducting the service, speaking on your behalf, introducing speakers and really helping you through the process of telling your loved one's story.
